The town of Cedaredge has initiated Stage Two water restrictions, mandating a 30% reduction in domestic water usage. This decision comes in response to a below-average snowpack and rapid runoff from the Grand Mesa, which have significantly impacted the town’s water supply.
Interim Town Administrator Carl Holm emphasized the fluidity of the situation, noting that restrictions could be adjusted depending on water availability. “It’s looking like it’s going to be pretty significant—it could be up to 40%,” Holm stated.
Under the current Stage Two restrictions, residents and businesses are subject to escalating drought rates. Usage up to 10,000 gallons remains at the base rate, but consumption beyond that incurs a 25% increase for every additional 4,000 to 5,000 gallons. Violations of these restrictions carry penalties: a first offense results in a warning, a second in a $250 fine, and a third in a $500 fine. Residents have ten days to respond to each notice.
While certain entities, such as the town golf course and cemetery district, are exempt due to separate water sources, town-owned parks will experience reduced water usage. If conditions worsen, the town may escalate to Stage Three restrictions, imposing a 40% reduction and potentially limiting operations of currently exempt businesses.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through the town’s official website and adhere to the new water usage guidelines to help conserve the community’s water resources.
